Lo oculto en las colecciones Thyssen-BornemiszaMuseo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza

The field of what is known as “the occult” includes very ancient knowledge, such as alchemy and astrology, and movements that came into being with modernity, such as spiritualism and theosophy.
This catalogue of exhibition covers the entire history of Western painting from the Renaissance to the 20th century. The occult also refers, literally, to certain hidden or unnoticed details in the works in the Museum that can acquire new meaning and value in the light of the esoteric tradition. In each case we have tried to document this possible connection, without pretending to prove anything and leaving the viewer to begin his or her own investigation.
