Competing Projects 2025

Our editorial project reworks “Il cimitero sepolto” (1982) by Francesco Leonetti, enriched with images from “Urbino. La storia di una città e il piano della sua evoluzione urbanistica” (1966) by Giancarlo De Carlo and technical plates by Arnaldo Pomodoro. The project for the extension of the Urbino cemetery, conceived by Pomodoro with Tullio Zini and Carlo Trevisi, won the municipal competition in 1973. Inspired by Etruscan necropolises and early Christian burials, it envisaged simple niches along the walls of a cross-shaped excavation on the hill opposite the mausoleum of San Bernardino. Despite its innovative and symbolic value, the project was abandoned due to a heated public and academic debate. Our research work has rediscovered the technical plates and brought to light this forgotten history of Urbino, documented in Leonetti’s book with interventions and ministerial acts. We used Fedrigoni paper and typefaces from the Optimo foundry.
