A novel, written by Florian Havemann.

The story of two friends: one, a business man, starts a company in the eastern part of Germany, in a provincial town. He gets a letter from the tax office to pay a Million but is sure that there has been a mistake. The next day his case is the headline in the provincial newspaper. As the result of it he looses everything: the bank loans needed for his business, his firm, his property, his house and his wife. At the end it comes out it has been a computer error. He should have got back the Million from the tax office. The other one, a writer without success, sees the chance to write a realistic novel about the story of his friend. He turns into a parasite of his friend’s life and destiny. He fails to reach a success. At the end he escapes into journalism.

Florian Havemann was for ten years a judge at the constitutional court of Brandenburg. All the many stories in the book are influenced by cases he was confronted with at this time.
