A poem can achieve many things. Verses touch us in different ways, provoke thought, and stir emotions. But how are poems “read” when they are expanded through a visual form and noted with abstract compositions of shapes? My work “Papierpoesie” explores which techniques, forms, colors, structures, materials, and motifs capture the essence of the poem “Hautnah” by Gerhard Rühm. An interpretation of the poem and parameter lists for “color,” “form,” and “tactility” record the verses and serve as starting points for creating variations of abstract visual compositions. These compositions explore the depth between the lines and make the written text experienceable on an expanded level. The result is a book that examines the enrichment of image and text and invites exploration. A work journal documents the process with insights, thoughts, inspirations, and research.
