Il paradiso terrestre Federica Zancato Illustratrice e Paper Artist
Four personifications of the winds, from east to west and from north to south, take shape in these hand-crafted portraits made with tone-on-tone Fedrigoni papers. The idea was inspired by reading Hans Christian Andersen’s tale *The Garden of Paradise*, where the winds materialize at their mother’s home in a captivating and detailed description.
From the abstraction of the wind to the texture of the paper, the collage portraits represent the four brothers, each accompanied by an animal that uniquely characterizes them, in a particular yet concise manner, playing solely with the overlapping shapes of the paper.
Without a preparatory drawing, I focus on the essence of the portrayed subject, highlighting its unique features: pose, expression, and characteristics that make it instantly recognizable, even though its face is never complete.
