Um Dia de Chuva (A Rainy Day) Estúdio Miolo de Produção Gráfica
Eça de Queirós was writing “Um Dia de Chuva” when he died at 40 from amyloidosis, a degenerative disease that limits lifespan to about 5 years. In the U.S., over 3,000 cases are diagnosed annually. In 2020, a novel medication extending life expectancy to 10 years became available for free through a partnership between Pfizer and the Brazilian Government. To promote early diagnosis, Estúdio Miolo was invited in 2023 to materialize Eça’s unfulfilled tale.
We conducted extensive research to select resources that would bring Eça’s and the 5 modern co-authors’ stories to life, intertwining nearly a century of publishing techniques. The inner pages feature 19th-century printing techniques with Electroink/digital offset printing; onto custom-order Fedrigoni’s Arena rough paper; with the cover illustrated by Mário Níveo tying in centuries-old Portuguese tiles; and mixing cloth with Inkjet UV printing; all finished manually, breathing new life into nearly forgotten stories.
