Cape Byron Distillery is nestled amongst coastal rainforest in the Byron hinterland of NSW Australia, a distinctive sub-tropical ‘terroir’ that influences the whisky’s ageing process and flavour. The packaging creates an immediate sense of place. ‘Where rainforest meets the sea’ underpins the environment’s influence on the whisky. The front label visualises the rainforest misty with salt-laden air and has a lay down of white with digital print on top. Legendary distillers Edie Brook and Jim McEwan described the maturing whisky as “the colour of a Byron Bay sunset,” sparking design thinking for the bottle, the shoulder becoming a ‘whisky sunset’ vista over Mt Warning (the iconic landmark seen at the distillery entrance). We used Tintoretto Black Pepper to create the mountain’s silhouette. The bottle base incorporates a ripple from a drop of water further romancing our rainforest story. The back label featuring the Cape Byron lighthouse in the mist, with its gold foil light.
