In Conflict – Vol. ICirco de Ideias

In Conflict directly answers the question posed by the Biennale Architettura 2021: ‘How will we live together?’ Our cities and territories, as collective constructions, are public arenas where dissent – implicit to a plural democratic space – shapes the production of architecture.
This little red book, the first volume of a two-part catalogue, covers the Portuguese Pavilion exhibition. Its pages revisit 28 contentious housing projects from the Portuguese democratic period.
Besides drawings, sketches and photographs of the projects, a selection of newspaper cuttings provides news of the involvement of the press, political power and civil society. A cross dialogue between the curators and some of the project’s authors, its populations, and other protagonists complete this journey through Portugal.
This catalogue is an atlas of what has been done and what has yet to be achieved in this collective process of ‘living together’ which began with the carnation revolution in 1974.
