A Dog of Flanders, the pop up bookAID Berlin

This pop-up book was created as a final project at AID Berlin and narrates the story of ‘A Dog from Flanders’ by the British author Ouida, published in 1872.
It tells the sad story of a boy, Nello, and his dog, Patrasche, who cannot escape their tragic fate. Although the story is set in and around the Belgian city of Antwerp, the book is pretty unknown in most of Europe. However, in America and Asia, especially in Japan, there is a very large fan base.
The book measures 20 cm by 28 cm, has six pages and is equipped with modern LED technology that makes it unique. The book can be read in the dark with the light contributing to the sombre atmosphere, and the surroundings become part of the reading experience. A mobile phone charger is used to charge the built-in battery.
The papers utilized are Fedrigoni Splendorgel EW 230 g/m2 and 270 g/m2, both FSC-certified.
Utilizing various paper thicknesses has enabled the creation of ‘dominant’ features in certain parts.
