Lumière noireCARTIER-LANGE
«Lumière noire» is an artist’s book published by Papiers Coupés, France. It is related to my father’s death when I was a child. How to make readers feel the absence and disappearance, through the book, beyond words and illustrations?
Different techniques and media are combined: screen printing, pad printing, digital printing, laser cutting, special ink, various papers.
To put the reader in front of the disappearance I used a photochromic ink (first invisible, it becomes black in sunlight): the white page becomes black and makes the text disappear as a fading gaze…
There is a game of contrasts between light and shadow, black papers and white papers, black ink and white ink. Careful paper selection to support the contrast which led me to choose Fedrigoni Sirio ultra black for the intensity of the black and Old mill premium white for the quality of the white and its texture.
