In ancient Greece, the concept of friendship was considered the highest form of love and brotherly bond, and was expressed through the term ‘φιλία’ ( Filìa ).
This word contained a deep meaning that emphasised a close and lasting bond based on mutual trust, respect and protection.
In this perspective, the concept of ‘protection’ played a fundamental role. Protection that was symbolically represented by the iconographic image of the Eye. Indeed, the Eye symbolised the constant and attentive vigilance that each friend devoted to the other.
