Competing Projects 2025
DoushiteIn the shade of a tree
A 192 pages monograph documenting the work of Japanese born ceramicist Yui Tombana. She began creating doushite in 2019, a project she intends to continue throughout her life. Every year, influenced by current events and the artist’s own life circumstances, size, shape and material change. Each of the individual objects is inscribed with “どうして”, “warum” or “why.” “There are always questions and incomprehensible things around us. Even when we confront them, they never disappear. Sometimes they are so naturally present in our surroundings that we don’t even notice them. They aren’t things that need to be, or even can be, eliminated; they simply continue to exist.“ (Yui Tombana). The book is sewn and glued without a cover, therefore exposing the spine, creating a modest and raw object reflecting the irregularities of the hand-made ceramics.
