SANS (FR) 1628-1924non standard
The book is made of 22 signatures of 16 pages. Progressively, going through time, the paper gets thiner and thiner (from 170 g to 70g, from 1628 to 1924). The first 336 pages are a pure visual essay, the last 16 pages are made of a written essay (FR/GB) intertwinned with image credits. The signatures are sewn but not glued, the book is both solid and fragile, it has its own breath, its own movement, it own life in your hands.
The aim of the book SANS (FR) 1628-1924 from Sébastien Morlighem is to highlight the irrepressible rise, in France, between the time of the Enlightenment and the beginning of the 20th century, of a form, a thousand-faceted kind of writing, which is often taken for granted and flourishes in common existence. This form is the “Sans”, i. e. the letter without serif, or “sans-serif”. “Sans” means “without” in French : a preposition indicating what is missing, what is not or no more present.
