Nursery Rhymes Explained Edinburgh College of Art

Nursery Rhymes Explained is a series of illustrated books that take well known children’s rhymes into the modern age and highlight current issues within them.

‘Dr Foster went to Gloucester’ was re-imagined as an academic doctor travelling to Gloucester to attend a conference about reducing flood risks. However, when he arrived, it began to rain heavily and a flash flood occurred and soon the whole city was underwater. As I wanted the story to be as factually accurate as possible, I carried out extensive research in his education background, the city of Gloucester and the causes and effects of flooding.

I then created the covers for the rest of the books in the series. Humpty Dumpty focuses on land ownership and trespassing, Jack and Jill highlights access to clean water in developing countries, Georgie Porgie, the education of gender and sexual orientation in schools and finally Jack Sprat tackles body confidence and the problems with social media.
